One day, my husband said, "Hey, you should make me a shirt."
"Yeah, ok. Sure thing!"
I bought a pattern, some fabric, made a partial muslin and then...nothing. Nearly a year later as I was working on another dress my husband reminded me of my neglect. I really did feel bad. So bad, in fact, that I stopped working on that dress to make him a shirt.
I used this fabulous chambray by Lisette for JoAnns. I love this fabric! My husband, on the other hand, is not a fan. He says it feels like denim and denim shirts are not his cup of tea. Owell-I sewed it, I chose the fabric. I'm just that nice!
Besides, chambray is the perfect fabric for playing tetherball!
I used the Jakob pattern by Burda. This was the pattern I downloaded last year so I just went with it, trying to justify that purchase, I suppose. I should have trusted my better instincts and just bought the Negroni pattern that is ever so popular. I will be ordering it immediately after finishing this post.
The Jakob pattern was great, except for the placket, or lack thereof. The best thing about menswear is the details! Details and sexy top stitching. I'm a huge fan of top stitching! Anyhow, this pattern I used only had a continuous lap to put on the slit which was not a nice detail. Fine enough for a casual shirt such as this, where my husband can roll the sleeves. Not fine for one in which he'd like to leave the sleeves down.
So, all in all, it's wearable, fits well, and feels nice. Even looks a lot like this JCrew chambray for much less!

ReplyDeleteMy husband asked me to make him some pj bottoms. He even went out and bought the material for me, and it still took me a year to make them! I did the same thing, when I finally made them, I had enough material to make me a matching nightgown, LOL! Now he wants another pair, but with pockets!

My husband has one shirt he is in love with... I am waiting for it to wear our so I can take it apart and use it as a pattern. I made a blazer for an ex-boyfriend (we were dating at the time) and he never wore it. It turned me off from sewing for men; they don't appreciate it enough.
ReplyDeleteMy husband keeps on buying really big Hawaiian shirts at good will and ask if I can make them smaller. I'm a painter not a seamstress, don't let the sew machine in the other room fool you! I don't even know if it's an easy project, let alone at all possible.

ReplyDeleteI saw this the other day! Amazing. I don't think I have the patience to try something like that yet. I'm sure it's not as hard as I think, but I'll just think that until I do :) LOL
ReplyDeleteI think it looks good! If he doesn't like that it reminds him of denim shirts, maybe you can bleach or overdye it so it doesn't look so much like denim blue? Personally I think the blue looks good on him/his coloring from these pictures, so the alternative solution would be.. make him deal with it until he changes his mind and starts like denim shirts? :p
