Ten Years

I turned thirty last month.  Turning thirty was a big deal when I was turning twenty-nine...but I guess I had a full year to prepare so my past birthday wasn't so bad.  Actually, thirty is turning out to be a pretty big year!

The funny thing about turning thirty is, is that it isn't so old.  (and that makes it really old!)  Do you remember when you were younger and thirty was just ancient?!  Now that I'm there, eh...not so old.  Now eighty, that's old.  And I'll be glad to see eighty when I'm there!

I've been reading What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty and it got me thinking about what life was like ten years ago.  Ten years ago I was twenty.  I lived in an apartment with my husband, engaged.  I was going to college as an English major and planning on teaching high school.  In that year I made the decision to switch my major and go on to art school, majoring in interior design.  I had aspirations of working in a corporate firm, living in the city, all of that.

Throw kids into the mix though and goals change, or get split rather.  I have different goals for Jessi as a mother, than Jessi as an architect.  Someday I'd like to get my masters in architecture, but for now, my dream is being able to support myself working from home, being with my kids.

I love having the opportunity to work from home, alongside them, drawing Angry Birds and butterflies while typing away to you.  It's a dream really, that I'm able to be where I am right now so I'm so, so grateful for it.

Ten years ago I would have never pictured being where I am.  As the me twenty years ago though, and she probably would have told you I'd be right here.

If you're reading What Alice Forgot, follow along in the discussion here!

I was compensated for this BlogHer Book Club review but all opinions expressed are my own.

  1. Happy belated birthday! I was just thinking about how my life is different than I thought it would be at 32 but in many ways it's better than I'd hoped.

  2. Happiest belated birthday! This year I'll be 35... I never really considered "old" to be "old" until after 40 and now that is growing near. It's always interesting to stop for a moment and think back about where we thought we would be. May you be in as much of a happy place ten years from now!
