And just like that...

My son recently turned four years old.

Four is such a big age. Not a baby, not a toddler, but a little boy.

Despite my best efforts, he continues to grow up. Ephraim is a firecracker, full of energy, but will always pause for a moment in my arms.

For his birthday he insisted on a Cars theme...mainly because he wanted a Lightning McQueen cake. It was the death of me, I kid you not. I didn't start the thing until 10:30pm and ran out of red dye after kneading the fondant for 45minutes ya'll. Not awesome. But, I was not about to be defeated by this cake! I finally finished around 2:30am. I am retired from making car cakes. Send your requests elsewhere.

Most importantly, he walked out of his room and the first thing out of his mouth was, "Wow! That is the best birthday cake I've ever seen!" It was all worth it in the end.

I talked before about handmade gifts and thought about how that plays into birthdays and things like that. I compromise with my kids. If they want Cars, Dora, etc...fine. (I used to love Punky Brewster as a kid!) I choose to give them a few licensed things, and mainly just work with the color scheme of whatever they choose and hand make things to coordinate (favors, etc.) Plus, it's much cheaper this way than buying Cars plates, napkins, table cloths, streamers, balloons, yougetthepicture...

How do you compromise with your kids? Do you just say no Bob the Builder and do generic "machines" instead?

  1. Happy birthday Ephraim!! I'm super impressed by your cake!!

I guess our compromises are we don't tell grandparents not to buy something, we buy stuff for our daughter if we like it too (ahem, Curious George), and/or if it's so much cheaper than a non licensed item (like her Tangled table and chair set).

  2. The cake turned out wonderful! If you do decide to make another cake, you can buy pre-colored fondant. It makes life easier for those hard to obtain colors like red & black.
